The Donut! A small, delicious but sometimes dangerous delectable. It calls to us when you walk by the display cases at the grocery or stop to fill up at a gas station. They come in all sizes, shapes, flavors, and colors. They can be eaten plain, dipped into a drink or even added to other delights. So what is it about this little treat that so readily grabs our attention. It the taste? The smell? Maybe it is just the history of the Donut that attracts us to it. The Donut has been around a long long time. As far back as 1884 the Donut has been made and sold in the United States in shops and there has been evidence that even in precolonial times they were being made by natives. With that said it goes to say that the Donut has become a standard for us almost everywhere. You can find them everywhere you look these days; even in vending machines. As to what calls us to these little and sometimes big morsels of joy; I really do not know.
I myself started my first job as a Baker. I worked in a local grocery in the bakery frying the Donuts. After a while I also got to make them as well. As far as how they are made I can think of nothing that really makes them stand out against other treats. They are after all just flour, water and a few extra ingredients, I think the first thing that makes our mouths water over them is that they get fried in a vegetable oil. After they dry though is when the real temptations come. If you have ever tried a Donut without frosting or sugar it really does not taste that great. You get a little bit of joy from the golden skin that soaked up the vegetable oil flavor but that’s really it. It is not until the toppings are added that the taste really develops. Also the Donut is best eaten when fresh. If it sits too long the actual Donut becomes hard and looses that soft bounce it can have when fresh. Not that you would test that by bouncing it on the table!
So it looks like the frosting may be the right thing to blame for why we cannot resist those wonderfully made bites. Whether it be sugar, chocolate, or maple and many others frosting makes the Donut truly what it is today! My personal favorite is just plain sugar. No matter what topping you enjoy they all add that perfect amount of sweetness to the Donut. And of course who can forget the Donut hole! Those left over morsels that call our name non stop until they are all gone! It does not end there though; because you can fill Donuts with creams and jams as well as top them with yummy goodies. On top of that you different kinds of Donuts; Old fashion, cake, potato, and pastry Donuts. Now with all this talk of how good a Donut is; you may ask if there is anything bad about them. Well some say that too many may make you fat. I believe that is going to be true with any food that you may eat. So we can ignore that statement and go ahead and eat all you want! There is also the fear of most parents that too much sugar will make the kids hyper. They are probably right. I say if that happens them put them to work doing something fun but constructive. That way they can still enjoy their Donut treats.
I guess we will have to settle on the fact that Donuts will always be there calling our names. Telling us they are good and we should be eating them. Maybe we will come out with something new to replace these delightful treats in the future but for now I think it is just fine that Donuts have won over our hearts. Enjoy those tasty treats and whether you eat them by themselves or with something else I am sure your mouth will thank you.
