There are 27 UN World Heritage Sites in Mexico, and only three of them from the list primarily for their natural meaning, in contrast to the historical. The most beautiful and diverse is Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, 1.3 million acre ecological park with lagoons, forests, marine habitats and wetlands. It is the largest marine protected area in Mexico and offers one of the few natural treasures of the Yucatan Peninsula, is accessible for tourists.

Added to the UNESCO list in 1987, Sian Ka’an translates as “Origin of the sky.” It provides habitat for a diverse population of flora and fauna, as well as over 300 bird species. It is a small eco-tourism and education center that serves as a model for sustainable development in sensitive tropical ecosystems. The Center is supported by the various tours, fishing, accommodation on site, and various other activities are offered. Some of the ecologically responsible techniques the middle used rainwater collection, using wind and solar energy, and employment for wetland waste management. It also offers educational opportunities and scope of biological research.

There is also a sunset tour that centers on bird watching, where you float along in an open-air boat through the beautiful lagoons, while birds, plants and various ecosystems. The tour ends straight into the sunset over the lagoon and mangrove forests.

The kayak tours are designed to give visitors a intimate access to the natural splendor of the park. Single or double kayaks are available and experienced guides who also speak English and Spanish, will accompany you through the reserve for birds and wetlands. Basic is free, if you have never kayaked before. If you want only to explore the guides you will receive instructions and information on where to use ancient trading routes through the park, by the Mayas. This is an excellent option for experienced canoeists, but an additional fee may be basic for someone this tour is more advanced.

Sian Ka’an is a beautiful ecosystem to visit and learn more about history, ecology and sustainable technology, open your mind to possibilities you may never know. At least it will give you an appreciation and conservation of natural beauty that you never forget.
