The river Seine is one of the most famous rivers in the world, with it’s banks being the setting for some of the most beautiful parts of Paris. The river itself runs through much of France, with the mouth of the Seine part of the British Channel, and the river eventually flowing into the Atlantic.
There is much to the history of the Seine, and it is said that Joan of Arc’s ashes were thrown into the river after her death. Napoleon also wished to be buried on the banks of the Seine, although his wishes were not met.
Despite the length of the Seine, most people recognise it to be the river that runs through Paris, and indeed, there are thirty two separate bridges over the Seine in Paris, which obviously makes the river very much a focal point of the city. You can sit on the banks of the river and watch the hustle and bustle of the left bank, with the Notre Dame Cathedral as your backdrop, and I’m sure some people could do this all day. It is also possible to take excursion on the river, exploring either the left side, or right side of the river.
The Seine is a beautiful part of a beautiful city, and staying there is cheap and easy. There are numerous cheap hotels in Paris although pre booking would be advised if you are coming from another country. Take the opportunity to explore this wonderful place, either by boat or by foot!
